Stuart’s career spans the timber industry, trucking, business management and Local, State and Federal politics. Following active industry participation in Sydney and Brisbane, he became the owner operator of a sawmilling business in the northern New South Wales town of Guyra, taking an active role in the community. This led to his election to the Guyra Shire Council in 1987; he later served as Mayor. He stood for the Australian Parliament and was elected to the House of Representatives in 1998 as the Member for New England. During his time in Parliament, he was a member of various committees and was a key contributor to the House of Representatives Transport Committee Report, Beyond the Midnight Oil, in 2000, which investigated fatigue in the transport industry. Following his time in Parliament, he served as a senior adviser in the office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Minister for Transport, The Hon John Anderson MP. Stuart was responsible for advising the Deputy Prime Minister on heavy vehicle issues, and worked closely with Parliamentarians, departments, the National Transport Commission, road authorities, transport companies, the Australian Trucking Association and state and territory road transport associations. Immediately prior to joining the ATA, he was Chief of Staff to the NSW Deputy Opposition Leader and Shadow Minister for Roads, Mr Andrew Stoner MP. Stuart St Clair’s contribution to the Australian trucking industry – through his leadership role with the ATA – is based on a practical appreciation of the road transport task, the political process, policy development and implementation of that policy by government and regulators.
