This advisory procedure will provide users with a reference to significantly reduce the incidence of commercial vehicle ‘Wheel Offs’.
A ‘Wheel Off’ can be defined as the separation of a ‘tyre and rim assembly’ from a vehicle due to the failure of component performance. This failure can be due to
component fatigue, installation techniques, maintenance procedures and/or lack of follow up procedures.
‘Wheel Off’s’ contribute to downtime, equipment damage, and may cause personal injury or fatality. Currently there are varying levels of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and Recommended Procedures (RP’s) used by suppliers and operators of the transport industry in relation to wheel nut tensioning.
This document aims to refer to existing industry best practice techniques to provide guidance for the installation and maintenance procedures to ensure optimum
component performance. This will be achieved by the cooperation of the service providers, operators and drivers. This document does not override manufactures
specifications and directions.
